xanax for severe anxiety?

im_tiburon asked:
i havent mentioned this to my doc, mainly because im kinda embarrassed to do so but i have really bad anxiety, maybe close to panic attacks, but i feel panic attacks would include worse symptoms, but i have very bad social anxiety, and public anxiety, such as being outside, going to the store, basically doing normal things outside the house, i dont know where it came from but i do feel very uncomfortable in the “real world” i have taken a few benzos in the past, including klonopin, ativan and xanax, xanax actually worked the best but was taken off of it, ativan might have worked if it were a higher dosage and .5 of klonopin did no positive change, actually made things worse, so if i mention this to my doc my next appt. will he prescribe me xanax? im supposed to take a blood test the 24th, dont know what will show on it but i try my best mentally to be comfortable outdoors but it doesnt work at all, im also taking effexor for anti depressant/anxiety, please let me know
just want to say that its not possible for me to change doctors either, i dont have medical insurance, i dont know how i came about it, but the hospital assigned me this doctor because i had been in an urgent mental health and it just happened, so i can not see any other doctors, so maybe if i stress this to him he will understand, and let him know that im not seeking xanax to get high but that it seriously, genuinly helps me and hope he understands

Xanax definitely works but most doctors won’t prescribe it. It can become habit forming. Don’t be embarrassed to talk to the doctor about it……if you have to switch doctors because they need to know the degree you are having the anxiety.

I too suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I too prefer to stay away from crowds and any socializing as I tend to feel overwhelmed.
13 years ago I lost my mother at age 58 of a sudden massive heart attack. It was very traumatic for me. As of then I was taking anti-depressants like Paxil and finally Zoloft helped me after a year and a half. But I still continue to have the attacks and have been taking xanax for the last 13 years. I do not believe it is addictive. I take it when I feel I need it to help me get through the day without the anxiety. I also try to help myself with therapy when I do get the chance. And as much as I suffer from public anxiety, my work pushes me to not let the anxiety win over.
Most of my attacks happen in the evening, especially when I am very exhausted from work. I feel symptoms of suffering a heart attack. And that is one of my fears as, of course, heart problems do run on both sides of my family.
I also suffer from tinnitus. Tinnitus causes anxiety and anxiety worsens the tinnitus. Xanax has also been prescribed to me by my doctor for tinnitus.
Xanax is not good for long term use, rather than figuring out how to give you an unsafe medication for social anxiety, why not ask for a safe, non addictive one? Addiction is hell and it goes on for years. Another good option is Social Anxiety Anonymous, a 12 Step program for social anxiety problems that really helps.
