I am trying to get in to see a dentist today for a massive tooth ache. I’m worried about the effects their radiation might have on my baby (33 weeks) if they have to do x-rays.

What sort of effects might dental radiation have on my baby at this gestation of pregnancy?

My dentist told me that I probably had more exposure to radiation on the elevator ride to his office than I did from him x-raying my mouth, but just be sure, he wanted a letter from my OB stating what medications were OK for me to use before he would see me, and he double aproned my chest & stomach before giving me the x-rays.

Most x rays are not advisable when your pregnant, I also need work done on my canal but my dentist said we should suspend it until the
baby is born.
But am sure your dentist would consider your condition and advice you best

very minimal. the amount of radiation used should not effect the baby however there is still a slight risk. I had to have an x-ray when I was 16 weeks. they can give you a lead vest to wear plus they aim it directly at what they are taking a picture of. if they need to do an x-ray that will let you know the risks involved but usually for a tooth ache they will not do an x-ray unless they can not find the source by doing an oral exam first.
If you tell your dentist you are pregnant they should put a lead apron on you to protect the baby if you do need to have x rays although they will most likely not take any x rays anyway.
The amount of radiation you will receive is so small that it is unlikely to do anything to your baby at all. Only porlonged radiation is bad for you. It is highly unlikely to harm the baby at all. Chat to you rdentist about any concerns you have though and they will halp you through it.
Good luck!
