Beating Social Anxiety?

January 30th, 2011

jsh321s asked:

I am pretty sure that i suffer from social anxiety. I have a hard time being around people in general. Especially those my own age (I’m 15). Its been getting to them point that if i go in a store I avoid people as much as possible because it could cause me to hyperventilate if I don’t. Does anyone have any ways i can cure myself from this?

p.s I rather not tell my parents about this. I hide it as well as I can

Social Anxiety Wake Up Call?

January 11th, 2011

paranoidpal07 asked:

I’m 21, and as long as I can remember I’ve been very shy. For most of my life, that’s all I thought it was, shyness. However, now I starting to fear it might be social anxiety and/or social phobia. The only people I truly feel comfortable around are the people I see or talk to on a regular basis (my parents and very close friends). I even feel anxious and uncomfortable around many of my relatives. I got a big wake up call on my last day of class this semester. I am majoring in elementary education; something I love, however one of my instructors who is also my advisor told me that if I don’t get over my shyness, I am not going to be successful in teaching. She basically said, if I don’t do something to fix my problem over the holiday break, I need to find a different major. This really hit me hard. Recently I heard about hypnotherapy. I was wondering if any of you have heard about it curing or helping people with social anxiety or social phobia. I am desparate.
I just want to feel comfortable around people.

Causes Of Social Phobia Explained

November 1st, 2010

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

When an individual is extremely self conscious and also has extreme amounts of anxiety regarding social situations, it is called social anxiety. It is also referred to as social phobia and is a disorder. These people constantly have the fear of being judged, watched or criticized. These people have such a great amount of fear that it does interfere with life at school, work, and any kind of social activity or even with everyday life. Most of these people do realize that the fear is something that is not really needed but are still not bale to stop it.

Social phobia is also one form of phobia. A few people feel scared to drink or even eat in front of other people. Some of them do not speak in front of other people also. Some of the cases may be so severe that the person is scared to speak to another person. Physical symptoms develop in many of the cases of social phobia. They include blushing, sweating, talking with difficulty, palpitations, trembling, discomfort in the stomach and many more. It makes it very simple if they deal with these problems instead of worrying more about it.

Social phobia may be caused due to many a reason. In may be because of the fact that it runs in the family. Therefore, the children get the same problems from their parents. It may also be due to alcohol dependence or due to depression. In women social depression occurs two times as much as men for reasons which we do not know. It may start at childhood or even at adolescence. It seldom begins at 25 years of age. Researches have been going on in this field to learn all the problems that are causing social phobia.

Some of the researchers have been blaming the cause if these symptoms on a small structure present in the brain which is called amygdale. Our sense of fear is what is controlled by this amygdale. Another group of scientists believe that this social phobia is passed down from generation to generation. Yet another group of researchers say that the cause of this social phobia is due to a sensitivity that is very high to disapproval, it may also be based on physiological reasons or on hormones.

The environment may be yet another reason for the cause of social phobia according to a few researchers. This may be due to something that happened to someone else in the same situation. It is called observational learning. This in other words is learning to behave based on others around you.

Social Anxiety/Social Phobia?

August 5th, 2010

Enigmatic asked:

So I feel that I’m suffering from social anxiety/social phobia. I’ve definitely suffered from it for years but it’s really taking an impact on my life lately because I’m a young adult trying to figure out my future. I’ve always been naturally shy but this has stalled my life immensely.

For instance I find it hard to get or keep a job since I’m not comfortable in social environments. I blush immensely for the stupidest things. Even talking to close family members or even simply talking through a simple text message is hard for me to do. I do have other symptoms such as: avoiding social situations, I think I’m being judged (though I’m not paranoid), I do, at times, sweat in social situations, and there’s a few others.

So my question is, what are my options? Medication? I’ve tried hypnosis because it was recommended but it didn’t do anything at all. Who should I talk to about this, other than my parents? How do I know this is really what I have? I’m hoping to cure it so I can go to college and get a job.

I don’t have anything like agoraphobia since I can leave my house. And I’m not to the extreme that I can’t talk to people, it’s just bad enough that it’s affecting my everyday life.

Separation Anxiety? ?

July 22nd, 2010

Abby asked:

So 5 days ago I moved away from home and am now in college and I have been feeling horrid. Right before my parents left and we were about to eat at a restaurant but I felt super dizzy and sick to my stomach. It was bad. I am diagnosed with Epilepsy, so I thought it might be a case of that. We left the restaurant and came back to my dorm. My parents let me sleep it off, and I felt better.

However, after they left I have been feeling the same way ever since. I can’t eat, all I want to do is sleep… It is the worst in the mornings. At night I am nearly fine. Still without an appetite, but fine. In the morning, however, my stomach is in knots and I get the feeling you get right before you vomit, but I never vomit, therefore I never feel the elation of after the act. It is just hours on end of the before-you-puke feeling. It is horrible! It feels like I am suffering and all I can do is sit and take it.

I have come to believe that this could possibly be a case of Separation Anxiety. I am not sure on this, but I would like more opinions…

I would also like to ask for any suggestions you guys might have on how to cure this. People say it goes away with time, but dear lord how long do I have to suffer like this?

Thanks so much for reading!

How hard is it to get a waiver for past back pain if I am 21?

September 4th, 2009

ashotinthedark asked:

I was on some medication for it awhile back and it has gotten much better, I think it was just a pulled muscule. I had an MRI and xray done at my parents insistence and they didn’t show anything other than ‘minor dextroscoliosis’ but the doc told me that was normal and everyone has some of it. I want to join after I get out of college.
