OK, so.

I suffered a massive panic attack 3 weeks ago after smoking some pot. That was my first panic attack ever. Since then, I’ve been getting panic attacks + shortness of breath every day. I started getting chest + back pains 2 weeks ago, and I thought that it had something to do with my heart so I checked into the ER last weekend, but after an ECG and a chest X-ray nothing was wrong. I felt considerably better for about 24 hours after that. Now I am experience back + chest pains, shortness of breath, panic attacks, and lightheaded-ness.

What I want to know, are all of these symptoms from my panic attacks? If so, HOW DO I DEAL WITH THEM!!?? I am not panicked or stressed about ANYTHING. They just seem to come out of nowhere and make me feel like crap for the day.
I have not smoked pot or cigarettes since that initial attack.

Yes, your symptoms are those of a panic attack. Tell your doctor what’s going on with you. He may prescribe medication specifically for this problem.

I once got a panic attack after smoking too much weed. I stopped smoking after that and I’ve been good. you probably need to let the renaming THC leave your system.

I have also have a few panic attacks in my day. From what i’ve been told from doctors is that people have panic attacks ABOUT panic attacks. He also said that nobody has died from a panic attack. I know the feeling… racing heart beat, you feel as though you are losing control, sweating, shortness of breath. You say you aren’t stressed about anything and I find that hard to believe. Everyone has stress, both good and bad. If they continue, there is medication available that will take care of these quite well. Good luck

That’s what ***** about panic attacks. They usually are not brought on by anything. They are caused by an abnormal “fight or flight” response. If you picture how your body would feel if you were being chased by a predator, this is how you feel in a panic attack. Your body fills with adrenalin and you often have the symptoms you describe. People often feel like they can’t breath, like they are going to have a heart attack, or like they are going crazy. I have had them before, and I often experienced light headedness. Don’t worry. They are very common, although they are frustrating. Try taking deep breaths. This will send more oxygen to your brain and it will make you feel calm. And keep telling yourself that no matter what it going on, you are not going to die, you are not going crazy, and you will get through it. I would see a physician to rule out other causes, though, just to be sure. You physician can prescribe a benzodiazepine to take when you are experiencing a panic attack as well. These calm you down very quickly, but you only take them when you are having an attack because they are addictive. (valium, ativan, etc.) Smoking pot can cause an increase in anxiety, so I would stay away from that if you can. Try the deep breaths, counting and imagining the numbers in your head. You will be fine. I think panic attacks are very common part of everyones life at some time. See you doctor though, at least to let him know what is going on. Good luck!

I have a social anxiety disorder so I’m always having panic/anxiety attacks about 7 times a day, Deep breathing helps. Try not to think about the panic attack. Stop smoking pot now. When you get them, find a private area, kneel and pull your head to your knees while deep breathing.

I have tried pot before and it can cause bad anxiety. I felt like I was going to die when I smoked it. I would suggest never doing it again because you are apparently prone to anxiety. The symptoms you are having are caused by panic attacks especially if you have been checked out before and they can’t find anything wrong with you. Go see the doctor and tell them you are having bad panic attacks they can prescribe you medication to relax you. Drugs can cause things like this to happen even if you are not doing it anymore. My friend tried another drug and has had problems with anxiety ever since.

    Hi bigdrum6,

Panic attacks are the most scary and exhausting things to cope with.

I think what has happened in your case is that the pot caused the problem initially and that experience freaked you out so much that it kick started the follow up attacks.

Symptoms can vary but in general you get a feeling that you can’t breathe, your heart thumps, you get shaky and trembly, sometimes sweaty and you start to hyperventilate.

I can assure you that they won’t last forever, but rather than suffer it might be a good idea to visit your GP and explain everything to him/her,

You may be given something to calm you when you feel an attack coming on,

Just remember that these ARE just panic attacks and there is no way that your life is at risk.

I know the dreadful fear they can cause and how you feel totally alone in that you feel nobody else is capable of helping you as they don’t understand what you are suffering, but that is all part of the panic.

I replied to a similar question a few days ago and will repeat to you what I wrote to that person. The term panic attack seems as though it implies that it is all in your head and that you are imagining all these symptoms, but that is not the case at all. It produces very real and frightening physical symptoms and distress.

Please see your doctor. And remember….nothing lasts forever.

Hope this has helped a little,

    Love Mel.X
