Social Anxiety/Social Phobia?

August 5th, 2010

Enigmatic asked:

So I feel that I’m suffering from social anxiety/social phobia. I’ve definitely suffered from it for years but it’s really taking an impact on my life lately because I’m a young adult trying to figure out my future. I’ve always been naturally shy but this has stalled my life immensely.

For instance I find it hard to get or keep a job since I’m not comfortable in social environments. I blush immensely for the stupidest things. Even talking to close family members or even simply talking through a simple text message is hard for me to do. I do have other symptoms such as: avoiding social situations, I think I’m being judged (though I’m not paranoid), I do, at times, sweat in social situations, and there’s a few others.

So my question is, what are my options? Medication? I’ve tried hypnosis because it was recommended but it didn’t do anything at all. Who should I talk to about this, other than my parents? How do I know this is really what I have? I’m hoping to cure it so I can go to college and get a job.

I don’t have anything like agoraphobia since I can leave my house. And I’m not to the extreme that I can’t talk to people, it’s just bad enough that it’s affecting my everyday life.

    hello there

    sorry to hear of this

yeah i get the same thing and i think too that i have social anxiety. its awful. its gotten better since i got a job. trying new things helps a lot.

try taking valerian root capsules, its a natural plant aid to help what it does is it calms you down i take it before work and i dont get all nervous now at work its SUCH a relief and hopefully it can work for you

talk to a doctor, ask if theres anything to take

force yourself to try new things, the more you do the easier it gets, i know its working for me

i wish you good luck and i know how you feel because i feel the exact same way but there are some good natural herbs that can help you with the physical/even emotional symtoms

good luck and take care :-) )

you could find a therapist/psychologist, that will use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Or you could try anti anxiety medication…..not long term though. You just have to keep pushing yourself….practise conversations in your head before going into the office. Get your hands on books about social phobias and shyness. Or….(if I knew this when I was younger)….homeopathy and kinesiology WILL help you.

Good Luck and don’t push youself too hard….baby steps is good when trying to conquer shyness/phobias.

First make an appointment with your primary care doctor as soon as possible.(say it’s an emergency, or you’ve been feeling worse and worse.) Talk to your doctor about your symptoms, and then very seriously ask or outright demand a referral to a psychiatrist. Primary care doctor’s usually just give you some anti-anxiety pills to last two weeks and that’s it. A psychiatrist can take very much better care for you. You will be seen more often, have better communication, and help on working on your problem, plus they can recommend better medications for you. Good luck.

i was in this situation several years ago, but then i was in a situation where i need to continue my study where it was impossible to avoid social contact. i **** it though, but as it was impossible for me to run away, I tried to cope with that. i found out that it is very important to have something we really proud of. The key is to be proud of yourself. i am proud of being the youngest (and doing so well of course) in class (where it was hardly impossible for a girl of my age to be in that class). I’d suggest you to find your potential, be very good at it, be confident with what and who you are and let us see how this plan goes
