Separation Anxiety? ?

Abby asked:

So 5 days ago I moved away from home and am now in college and I have been feeling horrid. Right before my parents left and we were about to eat at a restaurant but I felt super dizzy and sick to my stomach. It was bad. I am diagnosed with Epilepsy, so I thought it might be a case of that. We left the restaurant and came back to my dorm. My parents let me sleep it off, and I felt better.

However, after they left I have been feeling the same way ever since. I can’t eat, all I want to do is sleep… It is the worst in the mornings. At night I am nearly fine. Still without an appetite, but fine. In the morning, however, my stomach is in knots and I get the feeling you get right before you vomit, but I never vomit, therefore I never feel the elation of after the act. It is just hours on end of the before-you-puke feeling. It is horrible! It feels like I am suffering and all I can do is sit and take it.

I have come to believe that this could possibly be a case of Separation Anxiety. I am not sure on this, but I would like more opinions…

I would also like to ask for any suggestions you guys might have on how to cure this. People say it goes away with time, but dear lord how long do I have to suffer like this?

Thanks so much for reading!

Best case would be to have a visit with your family doctor to rule out any serious medical conditions that you are unaware of.
Otherwise, though you state seperation anxiety, it could be a anxiety in general, or panic attacks.
You just moved away from home, you’re now on your own, starting school, making new friends, will you do well with grades, the list goes on. It’s a lot for people to take on for the first time in life, so the anxiety gets overwhelming.
Still….always go to your doctor if any condition lasts longer than a week.

It sounds like anxiety. You should speak with your doctor and see if you do indeed have anxiety, and if you do then find yourself a couselor and/or a psychiatrist and they’ll help you work through it.

How long it lasts no one can really say. It varies on people.

I’ve had my anxiety disorder for 2 years now, but I’ve made a lot of progress to overcoming it, so it is possible.

    Good luck.
