The other night I woke up having what I assume was a panic attack. From my research all the symptoms match what happened to me. But can you wake up having a panic attack? Also, should I see a doctor if this happened to me for no obvious reason, just to make sure there are no underlying causes?

you might have been having a stressful dream (or nightmare) that caused you to panic in your sleep. see a doctor to find the source of this stress if you get more panic attacks.

There are some people who wake up in panic attacks and are unable to move their bodies. This is what probably spurred the legends of demons sitting on people’s chests during the middle ages.

A panic attack is nothing to fret about. If it starts happening more frequently you need to consider seeing a doctor, lest it begins to interfere with your daily life.
