LVH / Heart murmer / panic attack?
January 12th, 2010
Mo asked:
I’m 42 & previously very healthy.
Went to ER with sudden h/attack symptoms – they said panic attack & high bp,
went to GP she said stress & high b/p – also a heart murmur.
Went to Cardiologist – diagnoised LVH.
a) Is there a connection between Panic / LVH / Heart murmur?
b) Do you think it was really a panic attack – never had one before?
c)Cardio did not mention h/murmur no one has before – do they come and go?
d) Been on Cardizem for a month and still have high b/p and chest pains – Cardio just increased it from 180mg to 300mg – is it normal to still have chest pains?

a) I think they are all conected to heart problems
b)If doctors thin it was a panic attack, then it probably was…some times they can discuise themselves as heart attacks, but they really aren’t.
c)I alway’s thought heart murmur was a hole in your heart…still livable so don’t panic…
d)I think it’s normal to still have pain…but if it gets worse see a doctor…
It’s ok…you’ll learn as you go…even though i hope you don’t have a panic attack again…..
a) No, Left ventricular hypertension is caused by chronic hypertension.
b) Its possible I would need to know more of the symptoms
c) NO it is still there, whether it be mitral, aortic, or Tricuspid. You would need an Echo-cardiogram to confirm.
d) That depends on its cause- My opinion is NO, lowering your blood pressure will not alieve the underlying cause- you need a stress test and an Echo-cardiogram. We usually give Cardizem to lower heartrates. I would suggest a Beta Blocker such as Toprol.

Better yet have complete bloodwork done. Do not discount blood tests like sed rate (ESR), c-reactive protein, Albumin, Globulin and Fibrinogen, complete blood count, and others (chest X-ray, ultrasound, arteriographic data, magnetic resonance imaging studies, electrocardiogram) etc.. Heart murmur could also mean be bruitts which could also mean a totally different diagnosis.
If you have a panic attack, then your body is probably pumping lots of adrenaline (fight or flight) and this makes the heart beat faster…
You can get a heart scan that show more detail..if you scroll down on this page there is a box to put in your zip code and find a place to get one done near you…it can show calcifications before they cause a heart attack…
LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) is left-sided heart failure, probably from the heart overworking itself on that side from the heart murmur. Usually left-sided heart failure can cause lung edema and it can cross over to the right side (because the right side tries to make up for the work that the left side can’t do)…then if right sided damage…you get leg and ankle edema…if your ankles start to swell, get it checked out right away…keep ankles up on stools or ottomans when sitting and feet up on a pillow at night in bed (to help ease the work of the heart some).Don’t stay up on your feet too many hours of the day, if possible.
Tell the cardiologist about the chest pains…did he say if you had cardiopulmonary hypertension? My mom had that. It is high blood pressure in the vessels between the heart and the lungs…You may have some calcifications or angina…he could maybe help you with meds for that…
There is a diet for hypertension. It is called the DASH diet. Here are some links to that (ask the cardiologist first if it is ok)

I learned that we are our heart. Our thinking, likes, dislikes, and all the things that we do affect us in every way.
Doctors cannot know where the body ends and the soul begins.
Take good care of yourself by hugging people and letting them hug you.
I’m not a doctor, but of course, use them old-fashiopned things such as air, water, sunshine, sleep, walking, and LOVE.
Guess what made me stop having panic attacks? And from breathing into paperbags?
My old Jewish doctor said to me….”In the old days, we would take you out behind the woodshed and give you a good whipping for doing that. Now just stop it!” he meant quit having panic attacks. I did.
That doctor cured me by making me realize that I could stop getting panicky simply by doing it..
Remember to do all the doctor tells you, but do what you can do also.
God bless your heart!!!!

Is your panic caused by chest pain? Do you have gas associated with pain? I ask because I had these symptoms and believe they are caused by lactose intolerance-taking lactaid now and all seems ok.It seemed to happen after I ate ice cream!
But I do not have high BP and I am seeing a cardiologist to confirm the source of the chest pain. Since I have had a heart attack I was pretty sure it was not a heart attack -but it sure would scare anyone who had nothing to compare the pain to. I take toprol and that slows heart and lowers the BP. Also take an ace inhibitor and that also lowers BP.
