Is my back pain from the epidural?

October 8th, 2009

brileysmom asked:

I had my daughter 4/2/09. I had an epidural. I am still having terrible back pain 9 moths later. I don’t really want to take pain medication. Is there something I can do to help ease my pain? Also could it be caused from the epidural?

I had an epidural and it never bothered me after I left the hospital. This was 5 years ago though. You should see a doc soon

It shouldn’t be from the epidural if it was done correctly. Sometimes the angle of the needle is off and can enter the wrong space. Most times it is just from childbirth. I wouldn’t take pain medication per se, but how about asking your doctor for a prescription for Celebrex to see if inflammation is the problem. Durabac is also very effective in relieving back pain due to spasms. I agree that pain medication such as Vicodin etc. is not the way to go. Hope I helped!

you mean 08, not 09 i guess… I had alot of back pain after giving birth but it only lasted weeks, not months. I took ibuprofen for it. i read that back pain after having a child is often due to your body readjusting to not being pregnant again, maybe it is this and not from the epidural. Try exercice – work on your abs so your body is better able to support your weight and take some strain off of your back. I hope this helps. You should mention this to your doctor

I remember having pain for a long time after my son was born. I never did see a doc about it. You might need to since it has been such a long time. In the meantime, run hot(as you can stand) water on your back when you are in the shower.Do this for at least 10 minutes or until the hot water is gone! If possible rest your back on a firm mattress or couch afterward for 30 minutes or as long as the **** will allow. This always helps my back pain. If you can reach the area affected, apply a liniment or analgesic cream. Good luck!
