How did you overcome anxiety and panic attacks?

February 25th, 2010

BeachBoarder asked:

I just started getting some attacks and symptoms throughout my days and I googled it and all these people are saying they’ve suffered for years with disabling anxiety and you just have to learn to live with it… which of course has made me even more freaked out. I don’t even want to live if I have to deal with this! I would never actually do anything suicidal but this is making me very depressed.

Any success stories? Preferably not from using drugs but cognitive behavior therapy or something else?

    Pills hun.. Go see the doctor and tell he/she what’s up and try to get them under control. Or find out whats stressing you out and try to resolve the issue. Take a vaca to Vegas and relax at the pool and have a drink. if you are 21+. Good Luck.

    The first thing I had to do was recognize that is was panic/anxiety and not a heart attack! My attacks had been so debilitating that I would often pass out and end up in the emergency room wondering what happened this time. I found a great therapist who taught me how to get through the attacks. When I felt one coming on, I would go somewhere alone, like another room or down the hall or whatever. I would sit quietly and count slowly, breathing deep and closing my eyes. Soon my heart rate would calm down, I would quit shaking and the attack would ease up. Sometimes I had to count quite high, but sometimes I could count only to 200 or so and it would ease up. The effort to count took my mind off the symptoms and I knew that my attacks only lasted 6-8 minutes, so I would just sit quietly, and keep doing the deep breathing as I was taught. Pretty soon the attack was over and I was fine. This didn’t happen over night, but as severe and as often as my attacks were, any relief at all was welcome. Now when I feel a panic attack coming on, I do the same thing, knowing that I can get through it without medication.( Xanax did help me in the beginning, but the side effects were horrible and I quit taking it.) Sometimes instead of counting to myself, I would count on my fingers or picture the numbers in my mind-anything to take my mind off the symptoms of the attack. Give it a try-it might work for you!!! I’d also suggest a good therapist. I also learned meditation and yoga to help me relax. Both can be wonderful tools to help you. Best of luck-you can do it!!!

    There are things that you can do without resorting to medications to help resolve the situation and create a calmer attitude that allows you to beat anxiety and panic attacks. You owe it to yourself and to others to manage your anxiety when it hits you.

    Anxiety is a terrible condition to have and leaves you feeling very isolated. You need to learn to understand your anxiety and then take control of it. Control through;

    1. Searching out your Trigger Points and what it is about them that affects you
    2. Understanding and directing your Self Talk
    3. Building support with loved ones and friends
    4. Facing each anxiety and panic attack knowing it will not harm you
    5. Forcing uncomfortable situations on yourself
    6. Facing your fears and seeing them for what they aren’t

    There are many self help options you can try, most of these programs are excellent and having amazing results. There are two that I can recommend and know that really do work.
    and

    Both of these programs are amazing, with amazing results, but remember like anything it is up to you to put in the hard yards to work on eliminating your anxiety and panic attacks from your life. They both come with online videos that talk you through your anxiety attacks, its like having your very own anxiety coach.

    Hope this infomation helps
