How can I stop having panic attacks?

July 6th, 2010

Dangercrazydave asked:

I have been having a lot of panic attacks recently, and they won’t stop. I have exams at the moment, finishing Monday, and have had six attacks in 3 weeks. The symptoms normally include hyperventilation, raised pulse (resting pulse is 52, in attacks it can rise to 120), feeling very hot (cold after attacks), chest pains (1 attack) and passing out (3 attacks). I have also found I’ve been blanking the last 30-60 seconds before I pass out. I am too anxious to concentrate on my revision. I have found I can releive anxiety by any form of physical activity (which helps in the short term), or by going the pub (which I know isn’t a constructive response). Has anyone else got any suggestions?

That must be misery for you. Get to your dr. and let him know about these attacks – he can provide you with a medication that will help to stop them. For example, Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax, Valium. They should only be used short term because they are all addictive.

Your exams are probably making things worse. Go for a walk as often as you can, or at least once a day. And not to the pub, wait till after exams for that (and not every day). If the attacks don’t go away after exams are over, see a doctor. A doctor will have other suggestions, beside drugs and walking. Good luck with your exams.

I **** that you’re going through this. It’s an awful way to feel. I think you’re right to keep exercising. Other than an rx you can also try to plan to have enough sleep which seemed to help me when i was going through that. I hope you feel better soon!

I used to get really bad vertigo and dizziness sometimes when I had panic attacks, but i dont get them so often anymore. When I got them alot more frequently I would go outside by myself and smoke a cigarette. It never worked if I stayed inside, I dont know why. And I also dont reccomend smoking, but sometimes you do what you have to.

I just answered another question about panic attacks in the mental health section-please view my answer there, and email me if you need more help. It might just be undiagnosed food allergies!

Yes, they do have meds for that, and they work best when combined with a short therapy course. See if you can put a couple of the exams off for a bit. Do it as soon as possible.

I have panic attacks and ive had them for nearly two years they are horrible. The first time i had an attack i thought i was dying, i still feel that way now but as ive had them alot over the past 18 months (three or four times a day) ive learnt to sort of control it sort of! The thing that helps me alot is to read something like a book something you can really get into so your not thinking about it. and it may sound scary but run up and down the stairs or on the spot whilst your having an attack. Nothing will happen to you, you will be fine just keep saying to yourself its happened before and nothing happened to me so i will be ok going to the pub is ok your socialising so its taking your mind off it just dont get paralletic coz having an attack whilst drunk is not nice. its hard i know but dont let it take hold of your life as it has done with me because im on the verge to having a nervous break down.
Honestly i am a wreck, fight it now whilst you can because it ruins your life.
Go to your doctor just explain whats happened and see what he says.
    your just stressed over exams.
Good luck with the panic attacks and your exams.
    Keep your chin up. x x x x x x x

I know exactly how you feel… i go through periods of high stress where i will have numerous panic attacks… i found that there is no cure and no quick fix, but there are things you can do to help… you have to learn how to handle your stress… when you feel a panic attack comeing on sit down (i pass out a lot and you dont want to do that standing up) concentrate on something else… i used to say my ABC’s backwards, but i got too good at that… oh, and i always carry a paperbag with me… hopefully when your stress goes down your panic attacks will go away for a while…

I’m sorry that you’re suffering with this. I did too at one point in my life, but it can be controlled, and eventually with the right treatment it will go away completely.

Go to for some good information on panic disorder.
