How can I stop having panic attacks?
July 6th, 2010
Dangercrazydave asked:
I have been having a lot of panic attacks recently, and they won’t stop. I have exams at the moment, finishing Monday, and have had six attacks in 3 weeks. The symptoms normally include hyperventilation, raised pulse (resting pulse is 52, in attacks it can rise to 120), feeling very hot (cold after attacks), chest pains (1 attack) and passing out (3 attacks). I have also found I’ve been blanking the last 30-60 seconds before I pass out. I am too anxious to concentrate on my revision. I have found I can releive anxiety by any form of physical activity (which helps in the short term), or by going the pub (which I know isn’t a constructive response). Has anyone else got any suggestions?

That must be misery for you. Get to your dr. and let him know about these attacks – he can provide you with a medication that will help to stop them. For example, Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax, Valium. They should only be used short term because they are all addictive.

I **** that you’re going through this. It’s an awful way to feel. I think you’re right to keep exercising. Other than an rx you can also try to plan to have enough sleep which seemed to help me when i was going through that. I hope you feel better soon!

I used to get really bad vertigo and dizziness sometimes when I had panic attacks, but i dont get them so often anymore. When I got them alot more frequently I would go outside by myself and smoke a cigarette. It never worked if I stayed inside, I dont know why. And I also dont reccomend smoking, but sometimes you do what you have to.

I just answered another question about panic attacks in the mental health section-please view my answer there, and email me if you need more help. It might just be undiagnosed food allergies!

Yes, they do have meds for that, and they work best when combined with a short therapy course. See if you can put a couple of the exams off for a bit. Do it as soon as possible.

I know exactly how you feel… i go through periods of high stress where i will have numerous panic attacks… i found that there is no cure and no quick fix, but there are things you can do to help… you have to learn how to handle your stress… when you feel a panic attack comeing on sit down (i pass out a lot and you dont want to do that standing up) concentrate on something else… i used to say my ABC’s backwards, but i got too good at that… oh, and i always carry a paperbag with me… hopefully when your stress goes down your panic attacks will go away for a while…

I’m sorry that you’re suffering with this. I did too at one point in my life, but it can be controlled, and eventually with the right treatment it will go away completely.
