Can withdrawl of Marijuana cause back pain?

Kelsey asked:
A friend of mine has recently stopped smoking marijuana after what was once a daily routine of smoking. He now experiences really bad back pain and I was curious if this was some how related to the withdrawl of marijuana? All thoughts are appreciated.

There is no physical withdrawl from weed. He should see a doctor to see if there is something wrong.

i dont think its withdrawl but i used to smoke it when i tore my rotator cuff to dull the pain so if he was maskin an original pain by smokin then yes it will come back

The back pain is probably caused by activity. Something he is not used to. Actually getting up and doing something instead of laying around in a stupor.

no, this would not be caused by lack of smoking… although while he was smoking, the marijuana could have helped ease the pain.
most people will just feel (if anything at all) restless, slightly more anxious, and a little less hungry… but it shouldn’t cause anything like that.

It could be possible because pot is a relaxant, there for when you stop suddenly your body is shocked and may become more tense. Good for him that he has quit. In the long run he will be more healthy….

There is no withdrawal syndrome as with alcohol or cocaine. (Alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and cardiovascular instability and be life threatening). But heavy marijuana users can experience irritability, insomnia, nausea, and decreased appetite when stopping marijuana. I’ve never heard of back pain from marijuana withdrawal, so something else is causing the pain and should be evaluated. Perhaps marijuana was masking the pain that was already present but unknown to you until you stopped it.
Let me answer this quickly before the morality police come and answer your question. After doing some research, I found this for you:
As with nicotine withdrawal, quitting marijuana caused symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, sleep problems and difficulty concentrating, researchers found.
These were the only symptoms I could find. I think I should tell you that I also smoked marijuana daily and I did not have a single symptom. It could quite possible that your friend is having the symptom of sleeping problems which could be in turn, be related to the back pain.

it’s not the withdrawl, exactly, that’s causing the back pain- it’s that the marijuana was keeping his back pain at bay. he can get medical bud for that.
